June 2, 2021Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”
Do you believe that Australia exists? Have you ever been there? How can you be sure Australia is real if you have never been there or seen the continent with your own eyes?
You can undoubtedly see pictures of the land of Australia and talk to people who have been there. Many reputable people agree that it is there. Based on these pieces of evidence, you have no reason to doubt that there is a continent named Australia on the other side of the world. We may not see God himself in this life, but there is evidence all around that he exists and keeps his promises. This is not to say that we will always understand everything about God. We can’t.
One day, some followers of Jesus asked him to help them, increase their faith. Jesus replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you,” Luke 17:5-6.
The story is told of a man who read this verse in the Bible and decided to put it to the test. There was a large tree in his front yard, so he went out to that tree and said, “In the morning when I wake up from my sleep, I want you to be gone.” That night the man went to bed. When he woke up the following day, he went to the front door, opened it, and looked out into his front yard. “Just as I thought!” the man said. “It’s still there.”
Well, first of all, the man didn’t have mustard seed-sized faith, did he? In fact, he didn’t have any faith at all. When he told the tree to be moved, he never expected it to happen. In the second place, the man misunderstood what Jesus was trying to teach his disciples.
Jesus was not suggesting that we go around trying to move trees just to prove that we have faith. What Jesus was trying to teach his disciples — and what he wants us to learn — is that it doesn’t take great faith to produce great results. Why? Because the results don’t depend on us, they rely on the Lord. If the results depended on the size of our faith, then we would all be in trouble.
True faith is trusting God for the results and being faith-full in all that we have been can do. Follow the Spirit of God today and put your mustard seed faith to work. God will bring rain, sunshine, and fertilizer. Do your small part, and God will take care of the results.
